Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 4/29/2024

Brian brings us the forecast this week. Plan on warm and sunny conditions most of the week with some overcast and chance of thunderstorms over the weekend. Temps will be hot and water everywhere is at average or just below average flow running crystal clear. Brook trout fishing has been excellent. The reports from last week were the best of the year so far with dry fly action solid everywhere from the National Park over to the GW Forest streams. You can go wrong just about any size 12-14 dry fly right now. Add a dropper if you hit a slow spell during the day. Stock up on old favorites and try a few new patterns if you wish. Get out and enjoy these picture perfect conditions up in the mountains now. The spring creeks are fishing well and the dry fly action is really heating up. With crystal clear conditions we are fishing size 12-14 dry flies and a wet fly or nymph dropper and picking up fish on both. You can also get tactical with jig streamers fished deep around undercuts, structure, and weed beds. DWR is out still stocking through May. Keep an eye on the DWR site for daily updates. Junk flies like worm and egg patterns will work on freshly stocked fish. Crystal buggers, kreelex, and attractor nymphs will also work well. We have about a month and half of peak trout fishing season unless we have a mild wet summer so enjoy the action while its hot! Bass fishing has been great lately. The smallmouth spawn slowed a bit last week when water temps dropped but fish have begun sweeping and spawning again this week already. Many nests were swept and then abandoned last week but fishing on Sunday we saw many more nests in areas devoid of activity last week. We expect most of the smallmouth and largemouth will finish up dropping eggs this week and males will guard eggs and fry. It is typical to see males guarding through May as fish will be in various stages of spawn over the next 2 weeks. Big females will be found on the current edges next to spawning areas and the juvenile and non spawning fish are being caught in the fast water and riffles right now as they gorge on minnows, crayfish, and insects. Musky should be finishing up spawn here very soon with the water temps on the rise. Typically by mid May most fish are done and aggressively feeding in the warmer water temps. All our local fisheries are in great shape and it will be a beautiful week to fish. We hope you all have the chance to take advantage of the conditions.
