Welcome to the Mossy Creek Fly of the Week!
This week we honor the Near Nuff Sculpin

Most fly anglers know the name Dave Whitlock. Dave has been
designing and producing incredible fly patterns for decades. I
attribute much of my success tying deer hair patterns to watching
his videos and tying flies as a kid during the winter months. I
have had the opportunity to meet Dave a few times and ate dinner
with him at a Fly Fishers of Virginia meeting when I was about 14
years old. I was honored that he gave my deer hair bugs his stamp
of approval. Though I admire Dave most for his remarkable work with
deer hair bugs, he has come up with some ridiculously affective
trout flies. The near nuff sculpin is an absolute killer on most
any piece of trout water, but it is a MUST on our local waters
where big brown trout feast on sculpins. This pattern is effective
in tan or olive and is available in a good size range, 4-10. This
fly has also taken many smallmouth, largemouth, redeye, sunfish,
and even large carp! You will find this fly in all of our guides
boxes for fishing on Mossy Creek. It is sparsley tied with heavy
lead eyes so it will get down to the bottom where it belongs. In
early spring before the major insect hatches occur, this is one of
the only flies we will be throwing. Tie it on some heavy
fluorocarbon tippet this winter and fish it slow along the bottom
and hang on! We know you will become an instant fan. CLICK

Mossy Creek Fly Fishing proudly stocks flies from the most
reputable fly companies in the world, Umpqua, Orvis, Montana Fly
Company, Rainy's, and more. We take pride in hand selecting the
best quality patterns from each company. It is very important that
we offer our customers THE BEST possible patterns at the most
competitive prices. For example, we know which company ties the
best adams parachutes, prince nymphs, hare's ears, or even a woolly
bugger. What makes them the best? #1 We make sure they can
withstand a ton of abuse. Nothing is worse than buying flies just
to have them fall apart after a few fish. #2 They fish well(meaning
they float, or sink, or swim properly right out of the fly bin). #3
Quality control and quality materials. We want all of our patterns
to be as close to identically perfect as possible so no one worries
about having the perfect fly for the perfect presentation when they
head out fishing. We hope you will enjoy this page as we pay
tribute to the creators and manufacturer's of some of our favorite
fly patterns.
