Road Show

MCFF Somerset 2012Save the Dates! The Mossy Creek Fly Fishing East Coast Tour kicks off in January.

Every winter we pack up the trucks and trailers and head up and down the east coast to attend some of the best fly fishing shows in the country.  For those of you who get serious cabin fever, or just really want to learn more about fly fishing, these shows can be very helpful and fun

Most fly fishing show have a similar format.  There are usually famous fly fishermen, guest speakers, demonstrations, casting pools, and great booths to buy a wide variety of name brand and specialty products.

We start the 2013 show season with the largest fly fishing show in the world, The Fly Fishing Show, January 25, 26, and 27th in Somerset, NJ. This is a BIG show and can be difficult to take it all in, even with three days.

A couple of weeks later we head south to The Fly Fishing Show in Winston Salem, NC. This is the first year in Winston Salem, it used to be held in Raleigh. This is a two day show on February 9th and10th.

A couple of weeks later it is back north to The Fly Fishing Show in Lancaster Pa.  Last year was the first in this location, and we had a great time.  If you can't make it to Somerset, this is a lot closer.  The dates for Lancaster are March 2nd, and 3rd.

Unfortunately this is also the same weekend as the Rapidan TU annual fishing show in Warrenton.  We have always attended this smaller, but well run show, but won't be able to make it this year.

Also in March is the National Capital TU annual Angling show.  The 2013 date has not been released yet, but we plan to attend.  This show is held in Bethesda, Maryland.

The final show of the season for us will be the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival held in Waynesboro Virginia.  This show is scheduled for April 20-21, 2013.

Shows are a great place to purchase gear for the upcoming season.  As a consumer you will have multiple vendors to choose from under one roof, and many products are at low "show prices". There are ongoing talks throughout the day that cover every fly fishing topic imaginable.  Most shows have casting ponds or areas where you can test drive the latest fly rods.

If you have never been to a fly fishing show, or just don't know which ones to attend we hope you will plan to go to a few this season.  Below is a list of websites with all of the information you will need to enjoy these great show and festivals.

Happy fishing,
Brian Trow

We are very excited for our upcoming fall HOOK UP here at Mossy Creek Fly Fishing.

We are flying up the legendary Tim Borski from his home in the Florida Keys to spend the day with us on Saturday showcasing his artwork, talking fishing, and of course tying flies! Tim has an incredible tying methodology that makes tying fun and effective.

We were originally going to have Tim host a private fly tying seminar on Saturday but instead we will have him demonstrating his amazing talent all day Saturday from 9-5. Trust us, you will want to come learn some tips from Tim!

We also have some of Tim's original artwork on display and for sale at the shop. His original wood board paintings run $225 for the smalls and $250 for the larges.

Doors open at 9AM with coffee and donuts. Chat with Tim or one of our local fly tiers, check out our newly expanded fly tying room, or visit with one of the Mossy Creek guides to find out what has been fishing well in the area.

We will have a schedule of presentations posted later this week once Hurricane Sandy is long gone and we know everyone participating is safe and able to make the trip on Saturday.

We are planning on having Mossy Creek's own Tom Sadler discussing the ever growing Tenkara fishing technique.

Sage, Rio, Redington, FishPond, dealer Rep Bill Dawson demoing rods, reels, lines, and more.

Scott Caras from Cheeky Reels will be around in the afternoon to answer questions and talk about the popular Cheeky Reel lineup.

Colby Trow will be giving and afternoon power point presentation about catching bonefish in the Bahamas.

As always we will be holding a raffle with great prizes. The Grand Prize will be a 9' 5 Wt. Orvis Helios Fly Rod($795.00 value)! We will also have a Sage 4230 Reel, Rio Gold Fly Line, and a Patagonia chest pack to win!

Fishing in Hunting Season

Hunters all over the Commonwealth are headed into the woods for the fall hunting season and many fisherman and fly fisherman love to hunt.  That is one reason why I love fishing during the hunting season.  The streams are far less crowded this time of year and as we head into rifle season there will be even less pressure on the trout streams.

It is important if you fish this time of year to be aware of hunters.  Many fly fisherman are aware that wearing bright colors can spook fish, especially on small clear mountain streams.

This is the one time of year that you should break those rules and put on the orange hats. This is even more important if you have a long hike to the stream through the woods.  I always say if the trout can tell you what color hat you are wearing you are too close to begin with.

Fishing in the National Forest is where you will encounter the most hunters. Streams like the Jackson, the Bullpasture, and North River delayed harvest section are places where you will want to wear a lot of orange.  If you fish on private land then contact the owner and ask if there is any hunting allowed where you will be fishing.

If you would like to avoid hunters all together then look to fish in protected areas like the National Park.  If you are unfamiliar with Virginia's hunting season, check it out on the VDGIFs website.

Happy fishing,
Brian Trow

Tenkara Seminar Highlghts

Mossy Creek Fly Fishing was host to Tenkara USA founder, Daniel Galhardo who was in the Mid-Atlantic area to visit dealers and do a little fishing.

Daniel was in the shop on Saturday October 20th giving a presentation and casting demonstration.

In the afternoon we took Daniel and a group of avid tenkara anglers to Mossy Creek for a hands-on clinic and some fishing.

You can see photos of the outing on our Facebook page here and here

Be sure and check out the video Brian shot of the tenkara action!

Daniel used a Tenkara USA Ito rod, 15' of 3.5 level line, 4' of 5x tippet and the Ishigaki Kebari.

Listen to the commentary; Brian says, "don't you hate it when fish get on the way of your fish."

There was another fish rising downstream of this fish. Daniel is keeping his fish from disturbing that fish so he can try and catch it next.

Daniel, Brian and Tom had a chance to fish for brook trout on Sunday. They fished only tenkara flies on level lines using tenkara techinques. Brian and Tom took advantage of Daniel's coaching to become more skilled in the tenkara style of fly fishing.

Our thanks to Daniel for joining us this weekend. We look forward to seeing him at the Fly Fishing Shows this winter.

You can read more about Daniel's trip to Virginia in these Tenkara USA Blog posts:
